REPORT: Public administration employees warn against failure to endorse wage scale
Public administration employees staged a sit-in on Monday, urging lawmakers to endorse the series of ranks and salaries.

Mahmoud Haidar, head of the Public Administration Employees, called on Lebanese deputies to attend Tuesday’s parliamentary session in order to pass the wage scale.

He also warned that the lawmakers’ failure to attend the session could entail negative consequences, such as disrupting public administrations and boycotting official exams.

For his part, the vice-chairman of the Public Administration Employees, Walid Chaar, stressed the need to end corruption in public administrations, calling for a “just” pay scale.

Thousands of Lebanese teachers, civil servants, contract workers and others have been on a continuous sit-in, urging the state to grant them their rights.

Two weeks ago, the Union Coordination Committee held a demonstration to exert pressure on Parliament to pass the series of ranks and salaries draft law.

Nonetheless, Lebanese lawmakers failed to endorse the wage scale for lack of agreement over controversial items, and deferred discussions till after May 25.

This comes after the UCC resumed its movements, calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike.

The decision to revive movements came as a result of the failure of the Joint Parliamentary Committees to resolve the dispute on the Value Added Tax in a proposal aimed at securing the funds for the salary scale that was approved by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati's cabinet.

Former PM Mikati's cabinet endorsed the new salary scale for public employees in 2012, ending a long dispute that had triggered several sit-ins and strikes held by the UCC.

Former President Michel Sleiman signed the decree mid-June 2013 and it was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committees for further examination, however the law was never passed.
