REPORT: FM Bassil voices rejection to Syrian refugee camps inside Lebanon

Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil held on Friday a press conference whereby he tackled the file of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

"Any attempt to legalize the establishment of Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon constitutes a form of settlement," Bassil said, noting that the approval of camps is out of the question.

Bassil also warned against a Lebanese-Syrian strife as the proportion of Syrian refugees exceeds 35% of Lebanon's population.

"The international community has failed to assume its responsibilities regarding the Syrian refugee crisis," he said, holding it responsible in this regard.

FM Bassil also noted that Lebanon did not exercise its right to bar Syrian refugees from certain privileges, noting that the country has granted the displaced Syrians the freedom of movement and education.

On Thursday, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass said Lebanon faces the threat of political and economic collapse as the number of refugees pouring in from Syria is set to exceed a third of the population.

Derbass said the total was expected to hit 1.5 million by the end of the year, an excessive burden for a country of just 4 million people.

He noted that the influx of refugees fleeing Syria's civil war cost Lebanon's already fragile economy around $7.5 billion between 2012 and 2014.

Border communities hosting Syrian refugees are also affected because of the increase in people willing to work for low wages, he added.
