Tripoli residents staged Monday a sit-in outside al-Siddiq mosque, upon a call issued by the Association of Muslim Scholars, to urge for the release of Sheikh Hussam Sabbagh who was arrested on Sunday at an army checkpoint in the city.
During the movement, Sheikh Khaled al-Sayyed delivered a speech whereby he slammed Iran and Hezbollah, accusing the latter of seeking to dominate over Lebanon.
Al-Sayyed added that the arrest of Sabbagh aims at creating chaos in Tripoli, noting that it is a move fabricated by the Syrian regime.
Following the sit-in, the protesters headed for al-Nour Square where they raised posters of Hussam Sabbagh.
In this regard, a meeting is set to be held at the residence of MP Mohammad Kabbara.
On Sunday, LAF soldiers arrested Sheikh Housam Sabbagh and his bodyguards at an army checkpoint in Tripoli.
Following the incident, supporters of Sheikh Sabbagh gathered in Bab el-Tebbaneh and cut-off various roads in Abi Samraa across his residence. For more details, watch Bassam Abou Zeid's full report in the video above
