REPORT: EDL contract workers vow to continue their movement

The Head of Electricite du Liban contract workers committee Lebnan Makhoul said on Monday that EDL workers will continue their movement, noting that it will not be suspended until they see positive signs.         

Makhoul also called for re-examining the file that was submitted by the EDL Director-General office.

Earlier, a scuffle erupted between Electricite du Liban contract workers and security forces in the southern city of Tyre.         

This comes after the Lebanese security forces tried to reopen the gate of the EDL institution that was blocked by the workers.          

The security forces also shot into the air and arrested four EDL workers, which prompted others to escalate their movements, blocking roads and burning tires. Later on, two workers were released.        

In a show of solidarity with his two colleagues who were arrested in Tyre, EDL worker Ali Assi threatened to set himself alight at the institution’s headquarters in Cornishe al-Nahr.

EDL contract workers have been protesting for months calling on the government to employ them as full-time staff and to pay their salaries.         

Their protests have included shutting the gates of EDL headquarters in Beirut and disrupting normal work at the state-run company.
