REPORT: Lebanon's lawmakers fail for eleventh time to elect new president

Speaker Nabih Berri postponed on Tuesday (September 02) the presidential election session that was scheduled for today, until Tuesday the 23rd of September.

The session was deferred due to lack of quorum.

Ahead of the session, MP Fadi Karam told reporters that the March 14 forces will not abandon the candidate they had nominated for the presidential elections, i.e. Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea.

"If the other party [March 8 coalition] decides to agree with the March 14 forces on a consensual candidate, we would hold no objection," Karam said.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.
