REPORT: Lebanon’s ministers defer discussions over Syrian refugee tented settlements
A cabinet session was held on Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam.            

During the session, the ministers unanimously agreed on backing Salam’s efforts to proceed with negotiations aiming to release the kidnapped Lebanese troops as well as considering the matter as a top priority.       

The ministers also stressed the need to keep the Arsal captives dossier away from the media spotlight in a bid to protect the soldiers.      

In the same regard, PM Salam said Qatar is playing a significant role in the case of the kidnapped troops, calling for the election of a new president the soonest possible.         

On another note, the cabinet deferred discussions over the establishment of Syrian refugee tented settlements until the next session.        

Prior to Thursday's cabinet session, Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil pointed out that the establishment of camps for the Syrian refugees requires a decision from the government.                  

In the same context, Labor Minister Sejaan Azzi said "establishing refugee camps is not the ideal solution," noting that the only solution is the return of the Syrians to their country.          

Separately, Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq highlighted the need to "rescue Arsal from occupation," noting that “the northeastern town has been enduring military activity, which in turn is compromising the security situation."            

On the negotiations with the kidnappers of the Lebanese soldiers, the minister said that progress is being made without resorting to disclosing details on the issue.                

In turn, Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb called for unveiling what he described as the "mystery surrounding national issues," stressing the need to take the necessary decisions to improve the overall situation in the country.                 

For his part, Economy Minister Alain Hakim reiterated that the Kataeb party supports the ongoing negotiations that are being conducted in the case of the abducted troops but rejects the prisoner swap process.
