REPORT: LF leader Geagea calls for electing new president on Wednesday
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Tuesday suggested electing a new head of state tomorrow (Wednesday, November 05) and then participating in a legislative session to discuss the amendment of electoral deadlines so as to hold the parliamentary elections.    

"The Lebanese Forces is one of the parties most in favor of holding the parliamentary elections since the party's popular seize is much larger than the seize of its representation at the parliament," Geagea said in a press conference.      

"Some parties in the government have done their utmost to obstruct the parliamentary elections," Geagea said, noting that a committee overseeing the elections has not been formed thus far.    

"A decree which calls on electoral bodies to hold the parliamentary elections was passed but exceeded its legal deadline by 24 hours. Therefore, the electoral bodies are deemed unconstitutional," Geagea noted.        

"The problem lies in the cabinet's failure to prepare for the parliamentary elections," he said, adding "we will enter an overall vacuum if the parliament's mandate is not extended".

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.

Lebanon's presidency, allocated to the Maronite Christian community under Lebanon's sectarian division of power, is one of the three main political offices alongside the prime minister - a Sunni Muslim - and parliamentary speaker - a Shi'ite.
