Iranians stamped on an Israeli flag and set the flag alight on Wednesday (January 21) during the funeral for the senior Revolutionary Guard commander killed in an Israeli air strike in Syria.
General Mohammad Allahdadi was killed in Sunday's (January 18) helicopter strike in the Syrian province of Quneitra that also killed six Hezbollah fighters.
The attacks have drawn strong condemnation from Iran and the killings raised the possibility of a retaliatory attack, with a senior Iranian official suggesting that Israel would be hit at “the right time and right place.”
An Israeli defense official said escalation was possible.
Hundreds of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran, carrying Allahdadi's coffin aloft as they chanted during the funeral procession. Israeli flags were laid on the floor and stamped on and crowds set the flags alight.
Iran has dispatched forces to aid Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he faces an insurgency now dominated by Sunni Islamist groups.
