REPORT: Iraqi forces being trained by US troops
Hundreds of advisors from the US military are in the process of training and giving advice to Iraqi armed forces battling Islamic State (IS) group militants.

On Saturday, AP Television filmed training operations in the military camp of Taji, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad.

Around one hundred US trainers are involved in training Iraqi soldiers at the military camp.

Trainer Lieutenant Colonel John Schwermmer 5th Squadron, 73rd Calvary regiment praised the eagerness of Iraqi soldiers to learn fighting techniques.

US-led coalition jet fighters have heavily pounded hideouts of IS militants in Iraq and Syria while Iraqi armed forces and Shiite militiamen have continued battling the militant group in Tikrit as they seek to retake the northern city.

Recapturing Tikrit is seen as a key step toward rolling back the extremist group, which seized much of northern and western Iraq last summer.

Tikrit, the capital of Salahuddin province, sits on the Tigris River about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad.
