REPORT: Former PM Siniora to STL: Hezbollah tried to assassinate Hariri several times

Future bloc leader MP Fouad Siniora hailed on Tuesday his friend, assassinated former prime Minster Rafic Hariri, as a “charismatic” leader whose relations with world leaders troubled his opponents, prompting them to "sabotage" his achievements.

“Every time he made an accomplishment during meetings with Arab and world leaders such as building new connections … Hariri used to say God help us when we return to Beirut,” added Siniora.

“The Lebanese-Syrian security regime tried to sabotage his achievements made abroad,” the MP stressed.

Siniora also revealed that Hariri once told him that Hezbollah plotted to assassinate the latter on several occasions.

Five Hezbollah members have been charged with plotting Hariri's assassination in an explosion at Beirut, but have not been arrested so far.

Their trial in absentia began in January 2014 and is still ongoing Hezbollah denies involvement in the murder as the group leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has dubbed the tribunal as a conspiracy by his archenemies — the U.S. and Israel.
