REPORT: Mahfoud during UCC sit-in: Academic year will not end without a pay scale

The Union Coordination Committee (UCC) staged Thursday a sit-in at Riad al-Solh Square to protest against the failure to pass the pay scale.

During the sit-in, head of the private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud stressed that the current academic year will not end without passing the pay scale, calling on Speaker Nabih Berri to add it to the agenda of the next legislative session.

In this regard, Mahfoud held the political body responsible for any escalatory movements that might take place starting today until the end of the academic year, urging them to lift the cover off their supporters at public schools and the Lebanese University.

Commenting on Minister Wael Abou Faour’s call to cancel scholarships, Mahfoud said: “If you think that cancelling scholarships will improve the situation of official schools, you are mistaken.”

The Union Coordinating Committee has held continuous strikes for over three years, calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike. No concrete measures have been implemented thus far.
