REPORT: Lebanon’s FM tackles refugee crisis with German counterpart
Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil asked Germany to help his country in dealing with the huge influx of Syrian refugees into the Lebanese territories.

In a joint press conference with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday, Bassil urged assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces in the fight against terrorist groups.

“Germany is one of few countries that honor their commitments,” Bassil said, adding “the large flow of refugees should be addressed with a plan that would ensure their return to their homeland”.

In turn, Steinmeier vowed that Germany will not abandon Lebanon, saying “we are trying to assist, as much as we can, the countries hosting Syrian refugees”.

“The solution to the Syrian conflict is not possible without the assistance of its neighboring countries,” Steinmeier said, hoping for a political solution in Syria through the recent U.S.-Russia talks.

Nearly 1.5 million Syrian refugees are now in Lebanon. Their presence is creating a major strain on the country's dwindling infrastructure.
