REPORT: Judge orders release of Dr. Issam Maalouf on LBP 100 million bail
Beirut’s investigative judge ordered Wednesday the release of pediatrician Dr. Issam Maalouf on a LBP 100 million bail.
 
Earlier in the day, the judge had questioned Dr. Maalouf who was arrested on charges of neglect in the medical case of child Ella Tannous, referring it to the prosecutor's office pending a decision.
 
The questioning session was held in the presence of Maalouf’s attorney Sakher Al-Hachem and Dr. Jean Boulos, a representative of the Order of Physicians.

Following the session, Dr. Maalouf’s lawyer Judge Sakher Hashem said that Maalouf stressed that he did not misdiagnose the case of Ella Tannous.

The head of the Lebanese Order of Physicians Antoine Boustani declared on Tuesday (June 09) an open ended strike until the release of Dr. Issam Maalouf.

He also called on media outlets to tackle the issue of baby Ella Tannous in a "serious manner". Boustani stressed that doctors are not “infallible,” adding that in case a medical error is committed, legal procedures would take their course.
 
Last Friday, the Order of Physicians issued a work stoppage order at hospitals and medical clinics across Lebanon after police arrested a doctor accused of neglecting Ella Tannous, a baby patient whose limbs later had to be amputated.
 
The decision, announced at a news conference, came two days after Dr. Issam Maalouf was detained.
