REPORT: Investigations with hardline cleric al-Assir reveal leads to political assassination plots

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr referred on Wednesday hardline Salafist cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir and two others to the Army Intelligence Directorate for further investigations, prior to their referral to the Ministry of Defense.

Al-Assir reportedly revealed information related to the planning of political assassinations however names have yet to be disclosed.

In this context, General Security Forces carried out wide raids in the region of Sharhabeel, northeast of Sidon in light of Assir’s confessions.

General Security forces searched the house of Palestinian Fouad G. in the old city of Sidon after he was revealed to have close ties with several of al-Assir's supporters.

The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive hardline cleric Ahmad Assir as he attempted to flee the country to Nigeria via Egypt.

He was wanted for being involved in deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops.
