Arrested hardline Salafist cleric Ahmad al-Assir reiterated before the Army Intelligence Directorate that he had been "the first to support Sunnis in Lebanon against Hezbollah and the Hariri family's hegemony," saying he "wanted to fight them using violence as a means."
 
Sources close to the Army Intelligence Directorate told LBCI that Assir had allegedly denied  any accusation pinning him as the man who gave orders against the army, but instead was "pushing his followers to combat the Resistance Brigades" during the Abra incidents -claims that were disputed by investigators who presented him with evidence indicating the contrary.

Assir also denied that he had plotted an attempted assassination targeting Sheikh Maher Hammoud.

The hadline cleric was reportedly calm during the investigations that aim at finding the locations of his supporters, the sources added.

In this context, Army Intelligence Directorate carried out wide raids in eastern Sidon where explosive belts and other munitions were found.

The Internal Security Forces’ General Directorate arrested on Saturday (August 15) fugitive cleric Ahmad Al-Assir, wanted for being involved in the deadly clashes that resulted in the deaths of 19 army troops.

Security officials said Assir was arrested at Beirut International Airport as he was attempting to flee the country in disguise, using a forged passport, adding that he attempted to flee towards Nigeria via Cairo.
