REPORT: Interior Minister Mashnouq: The right to protest is constitutional
Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq lauded freedom of expression as a constitutionally given right to the Lebanese people, pointing out that the Ministry of Interior has vowed to protect all demonstrations.
 
In a press conference held Friday however, the minister stressed that citizens will not be allowed to march into the Serail or Parliament building.
“We do not prevent people from expressing their point of view as long as they do not resort to public or private property vandalism,” he said.
 
"Parliament police, the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security forces is responsible for the gunfire that targeted citizens during the protests."
 
He also warned protesters against "infiltrators” that will participate in Saturday’s demonstration, indicating that some slogans are prevented from being published for peaceful purposes.
 
Massive demonstrations launched by environmental anti-corruption activists, “You Stink”, kicked off on Saturday and Sunday (August 22, 23) evening to protest the government’s failure to resolve the waste management crisis.
 
During the protest, scuffles erupted between protesters and security forces, leaving several injured from both parties.
