Civil society activists along with a number of protesters, who are on hunger strike, blocked on Tuesday the road towards Martyrs Square after failing to reach an agreement with Environment Minister Mouhammad Mashnouq.
Shortly after, the activists reopened the road, stressing that all their movements aim at reaching a solution for the pressing waste crisis.
Earlier, a delegation representing the activists met Minister Mashnouq near the Environment Ministry.
Following the meeting, hunger striker and activist Waref Sleiman said that Minister Mashnouq clarified that his resignation will have negative repercussions on the country, adding that the minister voiced his support to the ongoing protests. Sleiman also noted that dialogue with the minister will continue, adding that no alternative plan is set yet for their next moves. “We will remain here to hold the officials accountable,” he stressed. He also revealed that he requested from Minister Mashnouq to submit his resignation to Prime Minister Tammam Salam and “to see whether his resignation would be accepted.”
