A second round of dialogue between Lebanese factions was held on Wednesday at the Parliament under the chairmanship of House Speaker Nabih Berri.
Following the session, Deputy Speaker Makari said that “it is impossible” to amend the Constitution in order to elect a president by a popular vote.
At the onset of the session, Speaker Berri reiterated the importance of holding dialogue sessions between Lebanese officials, stressing that “dialogue is the country’s only salvation.”
Prior to the session, Former Prime Minister Fouad Siniora urged the necessity of giving the national dialogue all the chances before calling it off.
Security forces implemented tight security measures across the parliament, closing all roads leading to Beirut’s Nejmeh Square seemingly since civil society activists vowed to prevent officials from participating in the session.
It is worth noting that Change and Reform Bloc leader MP Michel Aoun will not attend the session; however, Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil and MP Ibrahim Kanaan will represent him.
