REPORT: Activists block Majdal Anjar road to reject plans to set up landfill in eastern mountain range

Activists and residents of Bekaa towns cut off Majdal Anjar – al-Masnaa road on Sunday to reject plans to set up a landfill on Lebanon’s eastern mountain range to dump the garbage of Beirut and Mount Lebanon.

Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.

The piles of garbage rotting in the summer heat triggered nationwide outrage and serious health warnings.

Following the closure of the landfill, civil society activists have been staging protests that grew into a popular uprising against the political class that has dominated the country since its civil war ended in 1990.
