REPORT: Activists disrupt conference at Tripoli Order of Engineers

A conference held at the conference hall of the Order of Engineers in Tripoli concerning waste management plans, was disrupted on Saturday after civil society activists entered the hall.

The activists wanted to deliver a message for the representative of Minister Akram Chehayeb, expressing Akkar residents’ objection to the establishment of a landfill in the town of Srar.

The waste management crisis erupted in July when the Naameh landfill that receives the waste of Beirut and Mount Lebanon was closed.

A plan suggested by Agriculture Minister Akram Shehayyeb called for reopening the Naameh landfill for seven days to dump the trash that accumulated in Beirut and Mount Lebanon.

It also suggests converting two existing dumps, in the Akkar area of Srar and the eastern border area of al-Masnaa, into landfills capable of receiving waste.
