REPORT: European stance essential in finding solutions to challenges in Syria – MP Jumblatt

Progressive Socialist Party chief MP Walid Jumblatt called Saturday for focusing on the political reasons behind the Syrian refugee influx.

During a conference held at the Bristol Hotel in Hamra aiming at finding ways to build a common approach by regional and European countries to tackle the refugee crisis, Jumblatt considered the European position as fundamental to find solutions to the challenges in Syria.

“Do Russians really believe that their intervention in Syria will guarantee the country’s stability?” MP Jumblatt asked, pointing out that Moscow has interests in Damascus.

For his part, Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass indicated that the government is still adopting a self-distancing policy in terms of the Syrian crisis.

Minister Derbass reiterated that Lebanon has been bearing the burden of the Syrian refugees for many years, stressing that the difficult political situation can no longer endure this pressure.

He also emphasized that the European countries are concerned in helping Lebanon and the host countries, not only through financial aid but also through a positive intervention.
