Beit Beirut revives the long forgotten memories

"Barakat" building in Sodeco,  previously a shelter for snipers, turned today into a museum that tells the story of Beirut and its residents.

4 mad men lived in this building. Their names prove their madness; Tarzan, Bing, Cathol and Gilbert.

This building turned museum, located in what was then the eye of the storm of the Lebanese Civil War saw the struggles and misfortunes of the city's people.

Now residents, and with over  20 years of relative stability wish to maintain the building's heritage exemplified by its history and architecture.

The Beirut Municipality is currently preparing to assign a Cultural Director to oversee this transformation, turning the Sodeco building to Beit Beirut [Beirut's home].

The project was launched last Tuesday with the input of the Paris Municipality and under the auspices of the French Development Minister Pascal Canfin.

Beit Beirut aims at exemplifying beauty on the outside facade of the building whilst containing the memories of the Lebanese civil war deep inside its walls, etched with long forgotten memories.
