Introduction to the evening news 09-10-2012
Flying may take three hours, while falling could only take 5 minutes. Perhaps this is the basic lesson to take from the plan of the Austrian skydiver and extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner who hopes to take the leap of his life, attempting the highest, fastest free fall in history. The leap, in case it happened, will be aired live on LBCI this evening, after having been delayed a few times due to unfavorable weather conditions.

On the other hand, the failure to pass the pay scale due to the absence of funding sources led the Union Coordinating Committee to declare a general and inclusive strike on Wednesday. However, the economic bodies reiterated their rejection for the pay scale draft law, stressing that it only leads to further deficits and loss of income.

In this context, the schools’ first reaction to tomorrow’s general strike was confusion, as usual, whether to hold a normal school day or to commit to the strike.

Separately, the most prominent expected event is the arrival of the international envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi to Damascus. The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon revealed that Brahimi will be visiting Damascus in an attempt to convince Syrian President Bashar Assad to a unilateral ceasefire. However, this visit does not seem to be taking place soon as diplomats in the French capital noted that Brahimi will be visiting Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt before heading for Syria.
