REPORT: Poverty on the rise in Tripoli

Some choose only to speak of poverty, while others choose to look from a distance. However in Tripoli’s Tanak neighborhood, poverty looks you straight in the eye. Imm Mahmoud and Abou Mahmoud, an elderly couple, personify the meaning of despondency.

A tin roof is what protects their home from nature’s elements. Their condition does not differ to that of their neighbor, Imm Abdo, who won’t be looking forward to winter.

Tripoli has long lost its stature of wealth. According to a preliminary study conducted by ESCWA, 51% of the area’s residents earn an average of $3.8 a day. 25% of families in Tripoli make an average of less than $500 a month.

In an effort to contain this situation, a workshop has been launched to measure and study the condition of Tripoli’s impoverished residents.

However one question arises; would improving the lives of Tripoli’s residents serve the interest of political affiliates?
