REPORT: Why was Mohammad Ben Nayef appointed as Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister?

The appointment of Prince Mohammad Ben Nayef as Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister on Monday was expected by all those closely following the issues of the kingdom.

However, the remove of the minister’s predecessor Ahmad Ben Abdel Aziz after less than 5 months of his appointment raises many questions. Abdel Aziz was appointed Interior Minister on the 18th of June 2012, to be later removed from his position on the 5th of November 2012.

According to some sources, “this duration is not enough to evaluate his performance and his management” which leads to think that “there must be an event or an incident that caused the replacement of the minister.”

The sources added that during the last 5 months, the security situation in Saudi Arabia was deteriorating, especially with the ongoing clashes and the riots caused by those who oppose the ruling body or by groups defined as “terrorists”.
