REPORT: Prisoners subject to rape and physical abuse

Furious reactions are continuous in Iraq after some confidential information were leaked from a women’s prison saying that some women were raped and physically abused by investigators in order to extract forced confessions.

In this context, the Justice Ministry denied this matter and confirmed that physical abuse does not exist in its prisons.

In return, various women organizations and human rights activists assured the existence of rape cases and unethical practices in prisons, and pointed out that the presence of infants with their mothers who entered the prison more than 2 years ago is the evidence.

What is more doubtful in this case is that the administrations of women’s prisons are not allowing media and humanitarian organizations to visit the prisons and detention centers.
