Halabi withdraws his proposal to pay teachers additional $5 per working day

There are 963 primary and elementary public schools across Lebanon.

Only 49 of the 597 schools in the governorates of Baalbek, the south, Mount Lebanon, and the north were closed on Monday at the request of many contract teachers' committees in the public education sector, according to the Education Ministry's figures.

These preliminary statistics showed how the contract teachers' committees approach the issue of achieving their rights and enhancing the Education Ministry's support for them. 

Additionally, the donors disobeyed the Education Minister's request to provide 130 dollars in incentives to public school teachers employed under a temporary or permanent contract.

This prompted the Education Minister, Abbas Halabi, to propose providing five dollars for each working day from the support provided by UNICEF to the funds of public schools and high schools regularly.

The contract teachers were split between the majority who continued to teach and the minority who went on strike.

However, considering the current state of chaos in Lebanon, the majority confirmed that they are aware that holding a strike is not the solution. As opposed to the minority who insisted on a common set of rights.

Therefore, Halabi announced the cancellation of his proposal to pay teachers $5 per working day in light of everything that occurred in the country's educational sector.

He affirmed that he would follow up his efforts with the concerned authorities here and abroad to obtain better support. He also added that Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati would meet the Head of private school teachers' association, Nehme Mahfoud, to discuss the demands of private school teachers.
