Lebanon’s financial commitment to the STL to be tabled in October

Al-Hayat daily learned from ministerial sources that Lebanon’s financial commitment to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), by virtue of resolution 1757, will be tabled by the cabinet during discussions pertaining to the 2012 budget next October.

U.N. Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1757 was adopted on May 30, 2007 and it obliges Lebanon to pay 49% of the Hague-based court’s costs.

Nicolas: Sentence issued against Karam is not based on a fair trial

Change and Reform bloc MP Nabil Nicolas told An-Nahar daily that the sentence issued against retired Colonel Fayez Karam was not based on a fair trial, adding that it is rather a decision taken in advance.

“A fair trail implies that the witnesses’ testimonies and the defense arguments should be taken into consideration”, Nicolas said, underscoring the importance of not losing sight of the court’s moral compass.

Nicolas added that justice does not mean convicting an innocent person.

Fatfat: Col. Karam’s sentence will not discourage collaboration with Israel

Future bloc MP Ahmad Fatfat said that the Military Court’s verdict pronounced against retired Colonel Fayez Karam promotes the credibility of the Internal Security Forces (ISF) Information branch.

Fatfat added however, that the sentence issued to Col. Karam for treason is not enough to discourage people from establishing contacts and collaborating with Israel.

“In Col. Karam’s case, it appears that political interests overshadowed national ones”, Fatfat said.

Military prosecutor Fadi Akiki has found retired general Fayez Karam guilty of providing Israeli intelligence with political information about Hezbollah and its Christian ally, the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM).
