Israel to release 80 Palestinian prisoners

An Israeli official reported on Monday that Israel is set to release around 80 Palestinian prisoners ahead of peace talks.

This comes after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced on Friday that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators agreed to meet to resume peace talks halted since 2010.

The Israeli official added the prisoner release will start when talks commence, noting that they will be freed in stages.

He also stressed that all detainees are "pre-Oslo", in reference to Palestinians jailed before the 1993 Oslo peace accords.

The last round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians came to a stop in 2010 over the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
