Twitter verifies account of first Iranian diplomat

The Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has become on Friday the first Iranian officials to have a verified account on twitter; however, no one inside his country can read his tweets, and it is illegal for him to have a twitter account.

But since President Hassan Rowhani assumed power in August 2013, authorities have shown a greater tolerance on social, cultural and media issues.

On the 5th of September, Zarif caused a diplomatic agitation when he wished Jews a happy Rosh Hashanah (New Year), and stated that Iran did not deny the Holocaust.

Zarif who has nearly 19,000 followers on Twitter, also updates his Facebook page where he posts in Farsi and sometimes interacts with some of his more than 184,000 fans.
