Gunmen kill 6 Shiite mineworkers in Pakistan

A government official in Pakistan says gunmen have attacked a truck carrying mineworkers from a Shiite Hazara community in the country's southwest, killing six workers and injuring the driver.

The attack happened Friday in the Machh district of southwestern Baluchistan.

Local administrator Mohammad Zareef said the motorcycle-riding gunmen attacked the coal miners as they were on their way to residential camp after work.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. An al-Qaeda-linked militant group known as Lashker-e-Jhangvi has claimed past attacks on the Shiite Hazara community.

A low-level insurgency has been going on in Baluchistan over the last decade. Baluch nationalist groups demand autonomy and a greater share in province's gas and mineral resources. Islamic militants are also active there.
