Indonesia halts cooperation with Australia over phone tapping

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told Parliament he will do everything he "reasonably can" to repair relations with Indonesia damaged by allegations of Australian phone tapping of senior Indonesian figures. But Abbott told Parliament on Wednesday he did not "propose to overreact now" to Indonesian anger over this issue.

Indonesian President President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has criticized Abbott for not expressing remorse over media reports of wiretapping of his phone, and says cooperation agreements between the near-neighbors will be reviewed.

In this context, Indonesia has halted military and intelligence cooperation with Australia, including over the issue of asylum seekers, following reports that Canberra had tapped mobile phones of top officials, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

In a nationally televised address, Yudhoyono said he again demanded an official explanation from the Australian government over media reports quoting documents leaked by former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, that its spy agencies had tried to tap his mobile phone and those of his wife and senior officials.

"It's clear that this is a logical step Indonesia must take." He added that he wanted to return to good relations with Australia once phone tapping issue was resolved.
