US says new Indian Ocean search area may be opened for Malaysian jet

A new search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean as authorities try to determine what happened to a missing Malaysian airliner, the White House said on Thursday.

"It's my understanding that based on some new information that's not necessarily conclusive - but new information - an additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy."

Planes sent on Thursday to check the spot where Chinese satellite images showed possible debris from the missing Malaysian jetliner found nothing.

Malaysia's civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, "There is nothing. We went there, there is nothing," deflating the latest tantalising lead in the six-day hunt.

A spokesman for the Vietnamese search and rescue effort confirmed they had sent an aircraft to the area, but did not comment on the outcome of any search so far.

Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for more international coordination on Thursday in searching for the missing Malaysian Airlines plane.

He made his comments in Beijing on Thursday at a news conference following the final day of China's National People's Congress.

The Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 239 people went missing on Saturday morning while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
