'Almost one million' Syrian refugees in Turkey- PM

The number of Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey since the onset of their country’s crisis has reached "almost one million," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday, pledging to keep accepting the refugees.

"Are we supposed to ask our brothers not to come and die in Syria?" Erdogan asked as he addressed his party's lawmakers in Parliament.

Millions of Syrian refugees have fled their country to Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, while others also ended up in more distant countries of the Caucasus, the Persian Gulf and North Africa.

Earlier this month, the U.N. refugee agency said the number of Syrian refugees has exceeded 1 million in Lebanon, calling it a "devastating milestone" for the tiny Arab country.

Three years after Syria's conflict started, Lebanon has become the country with the highest per-capita concentration of refugees worldwide, struggling to cope with a massive crisis that has become an unprecedented challenge for aid agencies.

Lebanon, a small country with an area of 10 452 km2, faces greater challenges than Turkey (783,562 km2) in dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis.
