China executes 13 over terrorism, violent crimes

State media say China has executed 13 people for terrorism and violent crimes in the restive Xinjiang region.

The official Xinhua News Agency said in a brief report that the 13 were involved in seven cases and were executed Monday.

Also Monday, a court in western China sentenced three other people to death for planning a deadly car ramming at Beijing's Tiananmen Gate last year that was blamed on Muslim separatists.

One attacker was given a life sentence, and four others received jail terms ranging from five to 20 years.

Five people were killed and 40 hurt when a car ploughed into a crowd at the northern edge of Tiananmen Square and burst into flames. Those killed included two bystanders and three people in the car.

Footage of the trial on state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) showed suspects in orange vests at a Xinjiang courthouse.
