Kurds, IS battle over Kobani
Plumes of smoke rose over Kobani on Monday (November 3), a Syrian town on the border with Turkey which Syrian Kurds have been defending from Islamic State militants for more than 40 days.      

Onlookers watched the fighting in Syria from the Turkish side of the border through binoculars as Turkish military mounted security with tanks and armoured vehicles.       

Late on Saturday (November 1) Iraqi Kurdish fighters joined the fight against IS militants there, hoping their support for fellow Kurds backed by U.S.-led air strikes will keep the ultra-hardline group from seizing the Syrian border town.     

Attention has focused on Kobani, seen as key test of the effectiveness of the U.S. air strikes, and of whether combined Kurdish forces can fend off Islamic State, an al Qaeda offshoot made up of Arabs and foreign fighters.     

The arrival of the 150 Iraqi fighters -- known as peshmerga or "those who confront death" -- marks the first time Turkey has allowed troops from outside Syria to reinforce Syrian Kurds.
