Shi'ite Muslims chant 'down with ISIS' in Sydney's Ashoura procession

More than two thousand members of Sydney's Shi'ite Muslim community marched through the center of this Australian city on Tuesday morning to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

The procession is part of an annual celebration held all over the world during the Shi'ite Muslim holiday of Ashoura.

The Ashoura commemorates the 7th-century death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of Prophet Muhammad and an iconic martyr among Shi'ites.

As part of the celebration, some participants painted their faces with mud as a tradition to commemorate the Prophet Muhammad's appearing to an important Muslim figure when news of his grandson Imam Hussein's martyrdom came out.

Some participants told local media that the march was also an opportunity to show the world that "Muslims are not violent."

"We do not spread violence, we do not spread terror, we are only trying to spread peace, and basically Islam is a religion of peace," said participant Hawraa Alkhazaaly.

The procession was also led by women in chadors and green headbands chanting, “down with Isis” and “Hussein is for peace”.

Radical groups such as ISIS, or what is currently known as the militant Islamic State group, ostensibly belong to the Sunni sect of Islam and consider Shi'ite Muslims to be heretics.

At the lead was a large sign linking Hussein’s death at the battle of Karbala in AD 680 at the hands of the caliph Yazid to the death of Jesus.

“Oppressors attacked Jesus Christ to crucify him, but he was victorious.

After centuries, similar people attacked Imam Hussein to demolish truth and justice, but he was victorious,” the sign read.

“Today, terrorists have risen again. Who will be victorious over them?”
