Philippines fire leaves 17 dead

A fire swept through a department store in the southern Philippines on Wednesday, killing 17 people.

The blaze broke out at the three-story shop in Butuan, where the victims, said to be female employees, were sleeping.

At least 21 people were said to have been in the building at that time.

Three are reported to have escaped by jumping from a window and one remains missing, police said.
