Juppe: Syrian regime involved in “crimes against humanity”

France's foreign minister on Wednesday described Syria's deadly crackdown on protesters as "a crime against humanity."

Alain Juppe, speaking during a visit to Russia, was addressing a news conference in Moscow,alongside his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, and Russian defense minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

He said that Moscow continued to disagree with France on the approach towards Syria, and called on Russia to back sanctions against Syria at the United Nations.

Lavrov told the gathered journalists that Russia opposed, in principle, routinely using sanctions against oppressive regimes "especially if we are talking about unilateral sanctions which haven't been discussed in a collective format by the international community."

Juppe pointed out that the French position was that of the UN Human Rights Commission, "that the Syrian regime has committed crimes against humanity, and the way in which it repressed popular demonstrations is not acceptable."

But Lavrov urged Syria's opposition to engage in a dialogue with the authorities or risk further bloodshed.

The UN said 2,200 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March, inspired byt he revolutions sweeping the Arab world.But nearly six months later, the unrest in Syria has descended into a bloody stalemate with neither side willing to back down.
