Clashes broke out at Wadi Dinar, an area about 12 miles (20 kilometres) outside the town of Bani Walid when Moammar Gadhafi's loyalists from inside the town tried to ambush Libyan fighters' positions early on Thursday, a commander of the Libyan fighters said.

Thousands of fighters have converged on areas outside Bani Walid, some 90 miles (140 kilometres) southeast of Tripoli, and have threatened to attack if residents don't surrender by Saturday.

Officials have said the town emerged as a focus because of the number of prominent regime loyalists believed to be inside.
