NATO chief says will continue fight in Libya

NATO will continue defending anti-Gaddafi forces in Libya until the threat of attack from forces loyal to the ousted ruler is extinguished, the head of the western alliance said on Thursday. NATO's Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters in Lisbon that after the threat is gone, the alliance will continue playing a supporting role.

"NATO and our partners will continue the mission as long as the threat remains, but not a minute longer," he said. "Gaddafi and the remains of his machine must realize that there is nothing to be gained from more fighting."

NATO military operations in Libya began days after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1973 authorizing member states to use all necessary measures to protect civilians in Libya. Leading NATO members including the United States, Britain and France have demanded that Gaddafi leave power and recognized the National Transition Council as the legitimate representatives of the Libyan people.
