Sirte: The Final Battle
Civilians in the besieged Libyan city of Sirte continued to leave the city on Friday. Former rebel fighters checked the contents of bags and car boots as the civilians continued to empty the city through fear of cross fire and lack of essentials.

"We had to go today. There is nothing left, no food, no gasoline", said Sirte resident Ahmed Mohammed. NTC fighters surrounding Sirte launched a fierce offensive on Friday morning, attacking with dozens of weapon-mounted vehicles along the coastal road and firing salvos of tank and Grad rockets into loyalist positions.

NTC commanders have been promising for weeks to take former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's hometown, but have delayed the expected attack due to worries over civilian casualties.

Ambulances carrying wounded to a field hospital near the frontline screamed past convoys of fighters heading to the front. Loud booms and explosions echoed over the city. The heavy fighting could mark the beginning of the end for the weeks-long siege.
