New "massacre" in Syria's Homs kills 106 -monitoring group

Reuters news agency reported on Thursday that according to a monitoring group, more than 100 people including women and children were killed in a "massacre" carried out by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday in Homs.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that some of the 106 victims were burned in their homes and others were either shot or stabbed when pro-Assad forces stormed Basatin al-Huwaisa, a district of the central Syrian city.

This as, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has dismissed claims that explosions at a university campus on Tueasday in Aleppo were allegedly staged by Syria's pro-government forces as "sacrilegious".

For the second day in a row, the Syrian Foreign Ministry sent two identical letters to the Chief of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General, whereby it considered that the Security Council’s abstention from adopting positions condemning the terrorist acts carried out in Syria, is a non-ethical position and a direct encouragement for the terrorist armed groups to continue "killing and destroying".

The Ministry recalled that the Syrian government had presented a program for a political solution for the crisis, based on a national dialogue between the Syrians as the sole way to reach stability and security in the country, the region and the world. The ministry hoped that all the countries that aligned in favor of the "criminals" will reconsider their positions and join the "logic of truth and justice" and the fight against terrorism while taking the necessary steps to prevent it.

In turn, Jordan will prevent a mass exodus of Syrian refugees from entering its territory if President Bashar Assad's regime collapses, and will instead create a safe haven inside Syria to protect them, Jordan's prime minister said Thursday.

Jordan is also anxious that the lawlessness and street chaos that could follow Assad's collapse would spill over Syria's southern border into the kingdom a traditionally quiet country with a prided security record in the volatile Mideast.

"If the regime collapses and there was another exodus of refugees, we will stop them and keep them in their country," Ensour told reporters in his office. His aides said Jordan however has not yet decided and would unlikely close its northern border to block refugees.

Ensour said that rather than taking in another exodus, Jordan would dispatch Special Forces to "secure safe havens for the Syrians inside their country."

Ensour did not say whether he thought Assad would fall or not, but said Jordan has had "no contacts" with his regime in recent weeks.
