Judge al-Hajj takes firm stance amid treason accusations and political criticism

After Ali Berro accused Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation Judge Ahmad Rami al-Hajj of making “treasonous” accusations, and after the newspaper Al-Akhbar claimed that he was targeting a political faction, namely Hezbollah, al-Hajj’s stance remained firmly aligned with what was described as the pursuit of justice, at a time when accusations of treason are no longer seen as effective.

Perhaps the most notable move came through al-Hajj’s decision to prosecute individuals accused of conduct deemed unrelated to freedom of expression, particularly over insults directed at Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi.

This is seen as signaling a potential shift in the judiciary’s future approach, as well as in al-Hajj’s efforts to protect and preserve freedom of expression.

The public prosecutor also dealt firmly with individuals accused of insulting the president and inciting sectarian strife through social media platforms.
