Kenya president-elect to cooperate with intern'l bodies

Kenya's election commission officially declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the presidential election after he received 50.07 percent of the votes cast, its chairman said on Saturday.

"I therefore declare Uhuru Kenyatta the duly elected president of the Republic of Kenya," the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Issack Hassan, announced.

Kenyatta defeated his main rival Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In positions, Kenya's defeated presidential contender Raila Odinga rejected the election outcome and said he would challenge it in court, but called on his supporters to avoid violence.

"We will therefore shortly move to court to challenge the outcome that the IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) announced a few hours ago," Odinga told a news conference, adding he would accept the ruling of the court.

"Any violence now could destroy this nation forever, but it would not serve anyone's interests," he said.

For his part, Kenyan President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta, who faces international charges of crimes against humanity, said in a text of his speech to the nation on Saturday that he and his team would cooperate with international institutions.

He also said in the text of his speech, in which he did not directly refer to the International Criminal Court which has charged him, that he expected the world community to respect Kenyan sovereignty and its democratic will.

"We recognize and accept our international obligations and we will continue to co-operate with all nations and international institutions - in line with those obligations," he said in a text of a speech that was sent to Reuters and embargoed until he began to speaking.
