Celebrations in Benghazi before Libya’s “full liberation”

The city of Benghazi or “the revolution’s capital” in Eastern Libya woke up Saturday to celebratory gunfire and cheers for its victorious fighters in Sirte where the fallen Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed after being captured on Thursday.

Men, women and children took to the streets of the city that was the first among Libyan cities to rise up against Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in mid-February and where the new authorities are expected to announce the country’s “full liberation” on Sunday afternoon.

Benghazi’s residents welcomed the fighters who arrived at the first checkpoint, located at the city’s entrance, with celebratory gunfire to participate in the celebrations.
