US Senate rejects Republican plan to end government shutdown

Senators on Wednesday voted to reject a stopgap Republican funding fix to reopen the U.S. government, dashing hopes of a quick end to the federal shutdown.

Nonessential operations have already begun grinding to a halt after the midnight stoppage, leaving hundreds of thousands of civil servants temporarily without pay.
