Two rockets slammed on Thursday night into the region of Yarze, the first hitting the al-Frayha building near the Presidential Palace and the second landing near the Khashiqji building, military sources told LBCI on Friday.

Well-informed sources also told LBCI that the perpetrators probably used a mobile launch pad and then escaped the area.

It is worth noting that Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Joseph Douaihy inspected the region overnight, and confirmed that the attacks caused material damages.

The blasts were the latest in a series of rocket attacks that have targeted areas just south of the capital in the past two months, a direct fallout from the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Lebanon is deeply divided along sectarian lines and between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The attack comes on the same day that President Michel Sleiman gave a speech for Army Day in which he criticized the involvement of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the Syrian civil war in support of Assad's forces.

Sleiman called for Hezbollah's weapons to be folded under that of the Lebanese army. The group has a formidable weapons arsenal that rivals that of the national army.

The Army Command issued a statement on Friday whereby it announced that two 107 mm rockets were fired toward Baabda on Thursday.

The statement added that investigations are ongoing in order to determine the sources of fire and to reveal the identities of the perpetrators.

This comes after Kataeb MP Sami Gemayel said "the rockets that targeted Yarze undoubtedly send out a message to President Michel Sleiman" following his speech on the 68th anniversary of the Army Day.

In turn, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said that the rockets launched yesterday on Baabda and Yarze were similar to the ones that were launched from Ballouneh toward Jamhour and Beirut's Southern Suburbs.

Charbel did not accuse any party of launching the rockets on Baabda district, noting that numerous parties possess such weapons.

In this context, Charbel pointed out that the source of the attacks has not been confirmed yet, hoping that the investigations launched into the case will reveal all the details today.

Caretaker Minister Charbel also told LBCI the rockets that targeted Baabda send out a message to all the Lebanese people, stressing the need to hold dialogue.

For his part, Change and Reform Bloc MP Alain Aoun said on Friday dawn the attack meant there were no areas in the country that were considered safe from these sorts of security breaches.
