Salafist cleric al-Shahhal: Some want LAF to mimic Syrian army

Tripoli based Salafist cleric Dai al-Islam al-Shahhal held on Tuesday a press conference in which he said that Lebanon "is being held hostage," adding that some sides want the Lebanese Armed Forces to mimic the Syrian army.

Al-Shahhal reiterated that there is a conspiracy against the Sunni sect in Lebanon, noting that they want it adhere to the notions of Iran's ambitions in the region.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.

Sunnite armed men accuse the army of taking orders from Damascus and working against them with Hezbollah.

They also accuse the army of protecting Alawite political leaders from the Jabal Mohsen area of Tripoli who they say are linked to twin bombings at Sunni mosques in August that killed 42 people.
