REPORT: President Aoun officially asks Hariri to form new government as PM

The second day of binding parliamentary consultations to designate a new prime minister ended on Tuesday at the Baabda presidential palace with President Michel Aoun officially asking Future Movement head MP Saad Hariri to form a new government as a Prime Minister after 112 deputies nominated him for the post.

The Loyalty to the Resistance bloc was the first to meet with the president, declaring that it will not nominate any candidate for the premiership.

For his part, MP Nicolas Fattoush said that he nominated Future Movement head MP Hariri to be the next prime minister.

President Aoun also received the Armenian MPs bloc which declared that it nominated Hariri for the premiership since he is “the best person for this position at the moment.”

Afterwards, MP Imad Hout met with Aoun, declaring that the Jamaa al-Islamiah nominated Hariri for the premiership.

This as MP Robert Ghanem announced after meeting President Aoun that he nominated Hariri.

In turn, National Liberal Party leader MP Dory Chamoun said to reporters after meeting with president Aoun that he also nominated Hariri.

"It is my duty to put myself at the disposal of the President," he added.

Similarly, MP Emile Rahmeh met with Aoun and declared that he nominated Hariri for the premiership.

As for MP Ahmad Fatfat, he met Aoun as an independent lawmaker and said that he nominated Hariri.

“I wished the president a good luck. The oath of office was excellent,” Fatfat told reporters after the meeting.

For his part, MP Mohammad Safadi said that he nominated Hariri.

Aoun also met with MP Serge Torssakissian who nominated Hariri as the majority of the Lebanese lawmakers.

The last one to meet with the president was the head of the Development and Liberation bloc Speaker Nabih Berri who said it is time to “pay back the debt” to Hariri, adding that his bloc named him prime minister.

Hariri's nomination is part of a political deal that resulted in the election of Christian leader Michel Aoun as head of state on Monday, ending a 2-1/2 year long presidential vacuum.
